Are Bean Bags Safe for Kids? A Parent's Guide
Bean bags are a playroom favourite, but like any furniture with small-parts filling, there are a few safety basics every parent should know.
Childproof zips are non-negotiable
Every Bean Bag Warehouse bag ships with a childproof safety locking zip with no pull tab, so it can't be opened by curious little hands. You'll need a paperclip (or similar) to open it yourself for filling or top-ups — that's intentional, not a design flaw.
The warning label matters
Every one of our bean bags carries this warning, and it's worth taking seriously:
⚠️ WARNING: Children can suffocate if bean bag filling is swallowed or inhaled. Do not let children climb inside this bean bag. A bean bag is not a safe sleeping surface for an infant under 12 months of age.
Good habits around bean bags
- Check the zip is fully closed before kids play on or around a bean bag.
- Don't let kids climb inside the cover, even as a game.
- Never use a bean bag as a cot, bassinet, or sleeping surface for infants.
- If a seam or zip looks worn, stop using it and get in touch — we'll help sort a replacement.
