Bean Bag Filling Guide
Let's face it — filling a bean bag is the one part of the process that can go sideways fast. Do it right and it's a two-minute job. Do it wrong and you'll be finding beans in the carpet for a year. Here's how we recommend doing it.
Before you start
- Grab a buddy — filling is much easier as a two-person job.
- Pick a low-draft space. The bathroom or laundry works well.
- Have your fill ready — beans, foam, or a mix — plus a funnel or an old cardboard box with the corner cut off.
- Keep pets, kids and fans out of the room until you're zipped up.
Step 1 — open the safety zip
Every Bean Bag Warehouse bag has a childproof safety locking zip with no pull tab — that's by design, not a fault. Grab a paperclip (or similar) to unlock it.
Step 2 — fill the liner
With one person holding the liner open, cut the corner off your fill bag and pour it in slowly using a funnel. Fill in stages rather than all at once, and zip the liner between top-ups if you need a break — it stops runaway beans.
Step 3 — close it up
Once filled, close the liner, work it into the outer cover, zip the cover, and give the bag a few good shakes to let everything settle into shape.
How much fill do I need?
It depends on the bag — see the "Recommended fill" section on each product page for a size-specific guide. Some settling is completely normal in the first 30–90 days of use, especially with bean fill, so don't be surprised if a top-up is needed a few months in.
Beans, foam, or both?
Beans (EPS polystyrene) are the classic choice — light, springy, and easy to find. Foam holds its shape longer and gives a denser, more supportive sit. Many of our customers land on a mix — roughly 30% beans to 70% foam — for the best of both. Read our full guide to choosing your fill for more detail.
